In intensive care and bone marrow transplantation settings, daily bathing with chlorhexidine wash cloths reduces the risk of hospital-acquired infection.

چکیده
Context Hospital-acquired blood stream infections (BSI) remain as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care units (ICUs) and other high-risk settings. Incidence rates vary considerably, depending on factors such as patient characteristics, type of invasive procedures, infection control practices, definitions and duration of hospital stay. Recently reported BSI rates in intensive care settings range between 0.28 and 22 per 1000 ICU patient-days 2 and mortality may be as high as 48%. Interventions to reduce the incidence of BSI have had some success but it is important to explore other strategies.

Effect of daily chlorhexidine bathing on hospital-acquired infection.
BACKGROUND Results of previous single-center, observational studies suggest that daily bathing of patients with chlorhexidine may prevent hospital-acquired bloodstream infections and the acquisition of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). METHODS We conducted a multicenter, cluster-randomized, nonblinded crossover trial to evaluate the effect of daily bathing with chlorhexidine-impregnated ...

OBJECTIVE To demonstrate whether daily bathing with cloths impregnated with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate will decrease colonization of resistant bacteria and reduce the rates of health care-associated infections in critically injured patients. DESIGN Retrospective analysis of data collected 6 months before and after institution of a chlorhexidine bathing protocol. SETTING A 12-bed intensive c...

BACKGROUND Chlorhexidine bathing has been associated with reductions in healthcare-associated bloodstream infection. To determine the impact and sustainability of the effect of chlorhexidine bathing on central venous catheter-associated bloodstream infection, we performed a prospective, 3-phase, multiple-hospital study. METHODS In the medical intensive care unit and the respiratory care unit ...
متن کاملEffectiveness of chlorhexidine bathing to reduce catheter-associated bloodstream infections in medical intensive care unit patients.
OBJECTIVE To determine whether patients bathed daily with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) have a lower incidence of primary bloodstream infections (BSIs) compared with patients bathed with soap and water. METHODS The study design was a 52-week, 2-arm, crossover (ie, concurrent control group) clinical trial with intention-to-treat analysis. The study setting was the 22-bed medical intensive care...
متن کامل[Chlorhexidine daily bathing: Impact on health care-associated infections caused by gram negative bacteria].
BACKGROUND Health care-associated infections (HAIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of daily bathing with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) on the incidence rates of HAIs, with a focus on their causative bacteria, in a French ICU. METHODS From March 2012-May 2013, we enrolled 325 patients with at least 1 ...
